How To Care For Your Teeth Following A Whitening

Teeth whitening done by your dentist is a great way to get a sparkling smile. Instead of wasting your time with over-the-counter whitening products, your dentist will use professional-grade materials to turn your yellow teeth into pearly whites. Once you’ve had your teeth whitened there are things you can do at home to ensure they stay that way.

Post Teeth Whitening Care Tips

Brush, floss and rinse daily

You probably already have a dental care routine that you follow and it’s important that you stick to it after a teeth whitening procedure. Brush your teeth twice daily and floss at least once. Make sure you’re using proper brushing techniques and make sure you’re brushing for at least two minutes. Moreover, get yourself an electric toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes are more effective at removing plaque buildup and food debris from between the teeth. If you don’t already, incorporate an antibacterial mouthwash into your dental care routine. Mouthwash rinses away any food debris and bacteria from your mouth that the toothpaste and floss couldn’t get to. Furthermore, mouthwash provides you with fresh breath. Remember, that not all toothpaste, floss and mouthwash is created equal. If you’re unsure as to which products to use, you can also ask your dentist to recommend brands that they trust. Your dentist can also send you home with special teeth whitening trays that you can use. These trays come with a whitening gel that you apply before wearing them for a short period of time.

Watch what you’re eating and drinking

Certain foods can discolour the teeth and undo the wonderful teeth whitening job you just had done. It’s important to watch what you eat and drink since foods and beverages that are high in acid and sugar can stain your teeth. They will also ruin the enamel on your teeth by eating away at it. Food and drinks to avoid are red wine, coffee, tea, tomato or marinara sauce, sports and energy drinks, soda, sugary juices that aren’t naturally flavoured, and dark sauces (soy, hoisin, gravy). It may be impossible to avoid all these foods and beverages, so if you do treat yourself to any of them once in awhile make sure to brush and rinse your teeth right away after you eat.

Caring for your mouth following a teeth whitening treatment is easy. If you follow the aforementioned tips, you’ll keep your smile gorgeous and sparkling for a long time.
