The diode laser is a “high tech’ addition to the many instruments and techniques necessary to perform quality cosmetic and restorative dentistry.
The laser has many uses including providing greater accuracy of impressions for crowns, veneers and implants. It can be used for biopsies in those situations were a suspicious lesion or growth needs to be removed for microscopic study. Various periodontal (gum) procedures such as reducing inflamed tissue around orthodontic braces is another application, as is treating painful mouth ulcers.
It should be noted that the laser is very safe and so gentle that in most cases an anesthetic injection is not necessary only a gentle topical numbing gel. The procedure is practically bloodless, stiches are rarely necessary and as a result healing is comparatively rapid.
