Veneers are very thin porcelain covers for the front of your teeth or tooth. It might be compared to the application of a false fingernail. Alteration of the natural teeth is minimal- usually about one half millimeter of enamel has to be prepared.
There are many ways for veneers to improve one’s cosmetic appearance: Veneers can be used to hide gaps between the teeth. They can make teeth appear straighter than they actually are. They can smooth the edges of chipped teeth and provide an even color and hide or replace older fillings. Veneers take only two appointments to fabricate with about three weeks in between. Veneers are probably the quickest way to dramatically improve one’s smile quickly and permanently provide a youthful and healthy appearance.

Crowns (also known as caps) cover the tooth on every side and are an additional cosmetic option. There are a variety of types of crowns.
With the technology seen in Dr. Silberman’s office the typical dental tooth crown is entirely out of porcelain – no metal is used at all. The type of porcelain used is chosen for the strength needs and the cosmetic requirements that depend where in the mouth the restoration is being planned. For example, in the front of the mouth the strength needs are somewhat less so the modern porcelains have excellent translucence like natural teeth. Toward the back of the mouth, where the molars are used for chewing hard food, a different, stronger porcelain is chosen. All metal crowns are still used but much more rarely.
